One Citizen Day: World Cleanup Day

even a pandemic won’t hold us back

At Spadel, we believe that a sustainable world includes sustainability in everyone’s job. It’s why ‘Acting Together’ is one of the pillars that underpins our CSR Strategy 2025. To help make sustainability in the job more concrete and further team spirit, all Spadel employees spend a day giving back to society and our planet.

Volunteering takes us out of our day-to-day roles and lets us connect with our colleagues and peers in new and often surprising ways. Ever since we first introduced One Citizen Day at Spadel Belgium in 2017 we have experienced the many benefits of volunteering firsthand. And something like a global pandemic wasn’t going to stop our teams, even if it meant taking a slightly different approach.

Instead of organising a large group activity, small bubbles in Belgium tackled the area around our Brussels headquarters, with the Dutch bubbles taking on the town of Made as part of World Cleanup Day. By taking pictures of the litter collected and tagging the litters location with the Litterati app, our volunteers also supported scientific research. From picking up cigarette butts in the park to doing a digital cleanup and getting rid of all that old data taking up space and energy on your gadgets, there were many ways in which World Cleanup Day participants from 180 countries helped make our world just that little bit brighter in a single day.

The data gathered through the Litterati app supports scientific research and helps develop solutions for and by companies, citizens and municipalities. Taking note of what we find is a valuable way of obtaining information about the type of waste on the streets, its origins and the environment in which it is found.

World Cleanup Day by the numbers:

• Almost 100 of the 160 employees participated from Spadel Brussels (BE) and Made (NL)
• More then 10.000 pieces of thrash were collected.
• 6000€ was donated to The Plastic Soup Foundation by Spadel
