Spadel signs Plastic Pact NL

do more with less plastic in the circular economy

Over the last 50 years, the use of plastics has increased twentyfold. Plastic is strong, mouldable and malleable, and enhances comfort, safety, shelf life and hygiene.  No wonder it has become such a popular material.  However, plastic doesn’t come without disadvantages.  From fossil based raw materials to microplastics, it places a lot of pressure on the environment.  So why continue using it?

One important reason is that products made with plastics usually have lower carbon emissions than similar products made of other materials. Also, because we believe in the circular economy.  And to prove our commitment to being part of the creation of this brave new world, Spadel has signed the Plastic Pact NL.

Similar to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, the Plastic Pact NL aims to transform the way we view and use plastic.  Over 70 private organisations and the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment in The Netherlands have joined this initiative in which co-creation and partnerships take centre stage.

The Plastic Pact NL stands for everything that our Source of Change commitments do.  In fact, we are looking to go above and beyond these targets. The Plastic Pact NL boasts four main objectives and by 2025 the signees ensure that:

1. all single-use plastic products and packaging is 100% recyclable, and reusable where possible and appropriate.Spadel aims for 100% recycled and recyclable materials by 2025 and to increase the sale of reusable formats to 20%.
   
2. they use 20% less plasticsSpadel has been working on using less plastic for years. Spadel aims to reduce it by a further 15% by 2025 (reference year 2018). Taken together we will surpass the 20% target.
   
3. at least 70 percent of all single-use plastic products and packaging are recycled without loss of quality.Spadel aims for 100% recycled and recyclable materials by 2025, as well as a 100% collection rate.
   
4. all single-use plastic items contain a minimum of 35% recycled plastic, sustainably produced biobased plastics should be integrated as much as possible.Spadel aims for 100% recycled and recyclable materials by 2025, as well as integrate renewable materials as first adopters.
